Bitcoin Miners for Ireland

What an Irish buyer needs to know before importing Bitcoin mining hardware: the 230/400 V supply and connection sizes, cooling in a mild, humid climate, Revenue's import rules and the tax treatment of mining.

Voltage and electrical supply in Ireland

Ireland's supply is 230/400 V at 50 Hz. ESB Networks, the distribution operator, delivers low-voltage electricity between 207 V and 253 V in line with EN 50160; its connection conditions refer to 230 V for single-phase and 230/400 V for three-phase connections.

Sockets are Type G, and the Irish standard I.S. 411 covers 13 A socket outlets. At 230 V, 13 A is about 3 kW, less than the 3–3.6 kW a large air-cooled miner draws continuously; Bitmain's S21 XP, for example, draws 3,645 W and lists a 20 A single-phase input current. A miner needs its own dedicated circuit, for example with a 32 A IEC 60309 industrial socket, not a household plug.

Connection size is the other limit. ESB Networks' standard domestic connection has a maximum import capacity of 12 kVA, with 16 kVA as an enhanced option; three-phase domestic supplies are special connections of 20 or 29 kVA, and 30 kVA or more is a business connection. Hydro-cooled models such as the S21 XP Hyd need 380–415 V three-phase. Confirm capacity with ESB Networks and the installation with a qualified electrician.

Cooling for the Irish climate

Met Éireann names the Atlantic Ocean as the dominant influence on Ireland's climate, which spares the country the temperature extremes of many places at a similar latitude: winters tend to be cool and windy, summers mostly mild.

Moisture is the design point for air cooling. From late June, westerly air with a long ocean track brings more cloud, humidity and rain; from mid-July clear nights bring heavy dew, and in September fog is frequent around dawn in low-lying districts. Bitmain rates the S21 XP for 10–90% relative humidity, non-condensing, and for intake air from −20 °C to 45 °C, so sites should keep rain, fog and condensation out of the airflow. Snow is most frequent in January and February but generally lies for only a day or two.

Bitcoin mining in Ireland

The Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report (April 2025), a survey of 49 firms with data as of 30 June 2024, lists Ireland among the countries where respondents had their headquarters but not among the 23 countries where they reported mining activity. Cambridge's earlier Bitcoin Mining Map, last updated in January 2022, did show a share for Ireland, but Cambridge noted little evidence of large mining operations there and judged the figure likely inflated by the use of VPN or proxy services.

Rules for mining in Ireland

Revenue's Tax and Duty Manual on crypto-asset transactions (Part 02-01-03, last reviewed January 2026) says income from cryptocurrency mining will generally be outside the scope of VAT, because the activity is not an economic activity for VAT purposes. For direct tax the manual applies the general rules for crypto-assets: the trading income of an unincorporated business is taxed under normal income tax rules, a company's trading income under corporation tax, and gains outside a trade under Capital Gains Tax.

How purchasing works

Orders are handled the same way for every destination and scale with quantity:

  • 1–4 units: online checkout on products that show a price and a confirmed availability status.
  • 5–19 units: checkout or a volume quote.
  • 20 units and above: a wholesale quotation covering unit price, batch, freight and delivery terms.
  • 100 units and above, or a full site: handled by mining sales as a procurement project.

Where a product shows "Availability on request" or "Available", stock is not held in a warehouse; lead time is confirmed on your quotation.

Importing into Ireland

Revenue, Ireland's tax and customs authority, collects import VAT together with customs duty on the basis of the import declaration. Import VAT is charged at the rate that applies to the same goods sold in Ireland; most goods take the standard rate, which is 23%. Businesses registered for VAT in Ireland can use postponed accounting to declare import VAT in their VAT 3 return, and VAT-registered traders can generally reclaim it.

Any trader importing goods into the EU needs an EORI number, which is valid throughout the EU. The customs value is the invoice value plus transport and insurance, and the country of origin determines the duty payable, so duty depends on classification and origin. Electrical equipment rated between 50 and 1,000 V AC falls under the EU Low Voltage Directive.

Infrastructure for larger deployments

Beyond a few machines, the miners are one line of the bill of materials. Transformers, switchgear, PDUs, racking, cooling and containers are specified around the miner model and the site's supply voltage, and can be quoted as one procurement scope.
