Bitcoin Miners for Japan

Choosing and importing ASIC miners for Japan: what the 100 V and 200 V supply and the 50/60 Hz split mean for miners, cooling from Hokkaido to Okinawa, customs clearance and consumption tax, and how mining income is taxed.

Voltage and electrical supply in Japan

Japan's regulated standard supply voltages are 100 V (to be held within 101 V ± 6 V) and 200 V (within 202 V ± 20 V). The frequency is 50 Hz in eastern Japan, including Tokyo, Tohoku and Hokkaido, and 60 Hz in western Japan, including Nagoya, Osaka and Kyushu.

Ordinary sockets are two-pin Type A/B (JIS C 8303) on 100 V. At 100 V a 3.3 kW miner would draw about 33 A, so they are not an option. Buildings wired single-phase three-wire also carry 200 V, and 200 V air-conditioner sockets rated 20 A 250 V are made for dedicated circuits. At 200 V a 3.6 kW miner draws about 18 A, so allow one large miner per dedicated 20 A circuit.

Because the permitted band is 202 V ± 20 V, a 200 V supply can be as low as 182 V. That is below the minimum input of miners rated 200–240 V, and well below 220–277 V models, so check each model's minimum input voltage. Three-phase supply is 200 V, with 210 V in parts of the west. Hydro-cooled miners specified for 380–415 V three-phase need a supply arrangement agreed with the utility, because that voltage is not among the standard supply voltages. Confirm the details with your utility and a licensed electrician.

Cooling for the Japanese climate

The Japan Meteorological Agency describes a climate ranging from subarctic in the north to subtropical in the south. Northern Japan has warm summers and very cold winters, with heavy snow on the Sea of Japan side and in the mountains. Eastern Japan has hot, humid summers. Western Japan has very hot and humid summers that sometimes reach 35 °C or more, and Okinawa and Amami are subtropical.

For air-cooled miners, summer heat and humidity in the west and south are the limit on intake air. Hokkaido and the snowy Sea of Japan coast have the opposite problem: winter intake air can fall below manufacturers' minimum operating temperatures, and snow must be kept out of the airflow.

On heat reuse: in June 2025 Agile Energy X, a TEPCO Power Grid subsidiary, said it would mine in Toyotomi, Hokkaido, on power from local natural gas from April 2026, and use the waste heat for land-based fish farming and hydroponic vegetables.

Bitcoin mining in Japan

Japan is not among the ten largest bitcoin-mining countries in the Hashrate Index Q4 2026 heatmap, published 5 October 2026.

The notable activity comes from the power sector. Agile Energy X, wholly owned by TEPCO Power Grid, started as an internal project in summer 2020. It was established in August 2022 and began operating on 1 October 2022. It runs computing equipment, including crypto mining machines, on surplus renewable power so that the power is used rather than wasted. In June 2025 it announced a mining site at Toyotomi in Hokkaido, powered by natural gas from the local hot-spring area, planned to start from April 2026.

Rules for mining in Japan

Japan's National Tax Agency (NTA) addresses bitcoin mining directly in its official guidance on the tax treatment of crypto-assets (current document dated 26 December 2025; the mining answer was last updated in December 2021). Crypto-assets obtained by mining are taxable: their market value when acquired counts as income, under income tax for individuals or corporation tax for companies, and the costs of mining are deductible.

How purchasing works

Orders are handled the same way for every destination and scale with quantity:

  • 1–4 units: online checkout on products that show a price and a confirmed availability status.
  • 5–19 units: checkout or a volume quote.
  • 20 units and above: a wholesale quotation covering unit price, batch, freight and delivery terms.
  • 100 units and above, or a full site: handled by mining sales as a procurement project.

Where a product shows "Availability on request" or "Available", stock is not held in a warehouse; lead time is confirmed on your quotation.

Shipping to Japan

Importing into Japan

Goods are declared to Japan Customs, part of the Ministry of Finance. The importer pays customs duty and consumption tax to Customs, and Customs issues the import permit once the taxes are paid. The standard consumption tax rate is 10%: 7.8% national consumption tax plus 2.2% local consumption tax. Customs duty, if any, depends on the tariff classification and origin of the goods.

Electrical products also fall under the Electrical Appliances and Materials Safety Act, administered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The importer of a covered product must notify METI that it is starting the business, meet the technical requirements and apply the PSE label. Covered products may not be sold or displayed without that label. METI's examples of Category A products, which also need third-party conformity assessment, include AC/DC power supply units and extension power cords. A foreign company cannot file the import notification unless it is registered as a foreign company in Japan.

Infrastructure for larger deployments

Beyond a few machines, the miners are one line of the bill of materials. Transformers, switchgear, PDUs, racking, cooling and containers are specified around the miner model and the site's supply voltage, and can be quoted as one procurement scope.
