Bitcoin Miners for El Salvador

Choosing and importing Bitcoin mining hardware for El Salvador: what the 60 Hz supply means for air- and hydro-cooled miners, cooling in a tropical climate, and how imports are cleared.

Voltage and electrical supply in El Salvador

El Salvador's supply runs at 60 Hz, and international reference tables list the low-voltage system as 115/200 V, with Type A and B sockets rated at most 15 A at 125 V. Confirm the actual service voltage at the site with the distributor before choosing hardware, because it decides which miners can run at all.

A large air-cooled miner draws 3–3.6 kW, which no 15 A, 115 V socket can supply, and its power supply needs 200–240 V or 220–277 V. On a 115/200 V service, 200 V between two phases sits at the very bottom of the 200–240 V range and below the 220 V minimum of 220–277 V models, so check each model's input range, and expect about 15–18 A per machine at that voltage on a dedicated circuit. Hydro-cooled miners for 380–415 V three-phase do not match this supply and need a transformer or a higher-voltage connection.

Have a licensed electrician design the installation once the supply is confirmed.

Cooling for the Salvadoran climate

El Salvador has a tropical climate with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April, when air arriving from the Caribbean is dry, hot and hazy. Temperatures change little through the year and depend mainly on elevation. The Pacific lowlands are hottest, with annual averages of 25–29 °C; San Salvador, on the central plateau, averages 23 °C, with recorded extremes of 38 °C and 6 °C; mountain areas average 12–23 °C.

In the lowlands, heat and humidity together limit air cooling: intake air needs cooling to stay under each miner's maximum intake temperature, or hydro cooling with dry coolers is the better fit. Upland sites are easier, but rainy-season humidity and dry-season haze both call for filtered intakes.

Bitcoin mining in El Salvador

El Salvador became the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender, in 2021. Hashrate Index (April 2026) notes that it runs the world's only government-run geothermal Bitcoin mining programme, through LaGeo, which operates about 204 MW of geothermal capacity across the Ahuachapán and Berlín plants, and that the Chinameca field is under World Bank-supported exploration that could raise geothermal capacity to more than 400 MW.

The same report does not treat El Salvador as a competitive mining market: the national grid has about 2,200 MW of installed capacity with no structural surplus, and its regional table lists the country's hashrate as minimal.

Rules for mining in El Salvador

The Legislative Assembly approved the Bitcoin Law on 9 June 2021. In 2023 the Digital Assets Issuance Law created a legal framework for public offerings of digital assets, regulating issuers, digital-asset service providers and other participants in those offerings, under the National Commission of Digital Assets (CNAD). The law excludes digital assets that are legal tender, as to their use for exchanging goods and services, and its text contains no rule on mining.

How purchasing works

Orders are handled the same way for every destination and scale with quantity:

  • 1–4 units: online checkout on products that show a price and a confirmed availability status.
  • 5–19 units: checkout or a volume quote.
  • 20 units and above: a wholesale quotation covering unit price, batch, freight and delivery terms.
  • 100 units and above, or a full site: handled by mining sales as a procurement project.

Where a product shows "Availability on request" or "Available", stock is not held in a warehouse; lead time is confirmed on your quotation.

Importing into El Salvador

Imports are handled by the Dirección General de Aduanas (DGA), a specialised agency of the Ministry of Finance (Ministerio de Hacienda) responsible for enforcing the laws on international trade in goods. Clearance can be handled by a customs agent (agente aduanero), an auxiliary approved to act for third parties in customs procedures.

Value added tax (IVA) applies to imports of goods, with the customs value as the taxable base. Import duties (Derechos Arancelarios a la Importación, DAI) depend on the tariff classification and origin of the goods, so confirm both before shipping.

Infrastructure for larger deployments

Beyond a few machines, the miners are one line of the bill of materials. Transformers, switchgear, PDUs, racking, cooling and containers are specified around the miner model and the site's supply voltage, and can be quoted as one procurement scope.
