Electricity cost per day for any miner is power (kW) × 24 × price per kWh, and power is simply hashrate × J/TH. So for a fixed amount of hashrate, electricity cost scales directly with J/TH. Moving from 20 J/TH to 15 J/TH cuts the electricity bill for the same hashrate by 25%.
The most efficient machines are the newest and cost the most per terahash. Whether that premium is worth paying depends on your power price: the higher it is, the more an efficient machine saves each day, and the longer a less efficient machine risks running below break-even when difficulty rises. Machines in this band are previous-generation hardware. They can make sense where power is very cheap or the purchase price is low, and they are the first to become uneconomic when mining revenue falls.
Where no J/TH figure is stated for a model, the value shown is derived from rated power divided by rated hashrate and is labelled as derived.
